Inheritance of Secondary Metabolites Associated With Cowpea Resistance to Flower Bud Thrips

چکیده

Plant secondary metabolites are part of defense mechanism that form host plant resistance. Understanding the inheritance is preliquisite for conducting an effective breeding program. The objective this study was to determine mode associated with resistance cowpea flower bud thrips. Five genotypes varying level thrips were crossed in full diallel method 1. F2 evaluated and damage field screen house. results confirmed genotype TVU-3804 as resistant, TVU-9820 TVU-201 susceptible Flavonoids, antioxidants, proteins reducing sugars had significant (p < 0.001) GCA SCA effects indicating importance additive dominance effect controlling In addition, reciprocal observed crosses such Lori Niebe × Sanzi flavonoids antioxidants indication maternal key governing broad sense heritability low except flavonoid which moderate value, delaying selection a later generation would yield better while based on metabolites. experiment showed it possible use breed improved

Active aggregation among sexes in bean flower thrips (Megalurothrips sjostedti) on cowpea (Vigna unguiculata)

Male sexual aggregations are a common territorial, mating-related or resource-based, behaviour observed in diverse organisms, including insects such as thrips. The influence of factors such as plant substrate, time of day, and geographic location on aggregation of thrips is uncertain, therefore we monitored the dispersion of male and female bean flower thrips (BFT), Megalurothrips sjostedti (Tr...

Flower Development: From Bud to Bloom

In many commercial cut flowers, particularly those with spike or compound inflorescences, postharvest life and quality are highly dependent on the continued development of small buds to open blooms. Buds may be separated into two major types – those enclosed by a calyx, where petal growth is largely complete before the calyx opens or is shed, and those where the petals are naked and expand rapi...

Effect of sugar spraying on host plant resistance to western flower thrips in tomato

Sugar spraying can cause induced plant resistance. In this study we investigated the effects of sugar spraying on the resistance to western flower thrips, WFT, Frankliniella occidentalis on tomato. We tested three different sugars: sucrose, fructose and glucose, at four concentrations: 0, 1, 10 and 100 ppm, to induce resistance of the cultivated tomato (var. Moneymaker). Bioassays conducted 2 w...

Failure of Flower Bud Formation in Brassica Plants Associated with Phytoplasma Infection

Detection of phytoplasma classified in phylogenetic group 16SrI, ‘Ca. Phytoplasma asteris’, in the plants of interspecific genotypes of Brassica oleracea x Brassica napus and their back-cross toward B. oleracea (IW7.7xB1) is reported in Poland. The presence of phytoplasmas in leaves of plants showing failure of flower bud formation but not in the asymptomatic hybrids was demonstrated by polymer...

Influence of Prey Availability and Induced Host-plant Resistance on Omnivory by Western Flower Thrips

Theory predicts that the balance of nutritional needs, food availability, and the quality of particular food items are important factors in the feeding decisions of omnivorous animals. In this study we investigate factors that affect the feeding decisions of an omnivorous thrips (Frankliniella occidentalis) that eats both animal prey and plant foliage. In the presence of prey (mite eggs), adult...
